Wicked is a broadway musical which was made by Stephen Schwartz which was built around the Winnie Holzman. It is based on the novel 1995 by Gregory Maguire which is based on the novel Wicked: The life and times of the wicked witch of the west which is a classic retelling of the 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz from the author L. Frank Baum.
This is a story which is told in the perspectives of the witches and the Land of Oz where the plot begins before and continues after the Dorothy Gale who arrived in the City of Kansas, Oz. Wicked is a story of the two unlikely friends Elphaba and Galinda who had some struggles in their personalities and viewpoints, but their rivalry began when they fell in love with the same man. This was produced by the Universal Stage Production in coalition with the Marc Platt, Jon B and David Stone. This was the original production of the Wicked which was premiered on the Broadway in the year 2003. The original Broadway production won three Tony awards and seven drama desk awards.
The wicked recently celebrated its sixteenth birthday and also its 6,681st performance. This was a typical performance which takes approximately two hours and 30 minutes with intermissions. The success of the broadway productions made them win the Laurence Olivier Award based on West End productions. This was the first in series of the international productions. Wicked broke all box office records and is currently earning a weekly gross recording in Los Angeles.
Stephen Schwartz discovered that while they were on vacation they saw a potential for dramatic adaptation. The Maguire had to release the rights to the Universal Pictures, which was later planned and developed into a live-action film. Later, Schwartz joined hands with Maguire and sent an impassioned plea to the Universal producer Marc Platt who was signed and later he joined in as a producer to the same.
The original novel is all about the political, social and ethical commentary which works with the nature of good and evil. The story is centred around Elphaba who was always misunderstood, smart, fiery, with emerald-green skin and on the other hand, Galinda, who was a beautiful blonde, popular girl. The story is divided into four sections based on the plot locations and present events where the film got adapted in new different ways.
Most of the drafts looked into and adapted Maguire’s ideas of retelling the story, which was done from the perspective of the main villain. The storyline of the stage and adaptation goes far, and many brilliant ideas have made its way to the hated figure trying to tell the story from her point of view which allowed people look into their friendship and their growth.
